Our gardens can look pretty bleak in the winter, but they don't have to smell that way. In February the fragrance of
Daphne odora and tazetta varieties of narcissus can fill the air and make you think Spring is here. Then come the
flowering cherries and plums. Not only are they beautiful in the yard, but cutting branches and creating an
arrangement for your dining table will bring that spring-like fragrance inside to chase away the doldrums of cloudy
days. Even some jasmine varieties and ground covers begin to bloom and fill the air with sweetness.
In March the early roses will begin unfolding, although most will begin appearing in April. And right on their heels
the daffodils will be popping out like little bursts of sunshine. Then lilies and other bulbs.
So there's no reason to avoid time in your yard and garden right now. It's not too late to add a few new plants, even
if you have to leave them in pots until things begin to warm up and we're past the frost. Visit your local nursery and
see and smell what's blooming.
