Development and construction of The California Garden will be accomplished through a combination of

community participation, phased development, sponsorships, jurisdictional partnerships, philanthropic

donations, and focused fundraising efforts over a period of time.

These are special elements, such as

Fragrance Gardens, White Gardens, Sculpture

Gardens, Memorial Gardens, Woodland Dells

that can delight the senses and be a place in

which to contemplate, discover, and enjoy.

Classic gardens add a serene and distinctly different environment to our

daily surroundings and are a principle attraction in most world-class

gardens. The ancient cultures of Central and South America, Europe, Asia

and Africa will be included in the Classic Garden. It will be composed of

garden structure, architecture and plant species unique in the world of

botanic gardens and will afford an opportunity for The Garden to partner

with various cultural groups, sister city organizations, and the philanthropic

community.

These areas will contain collections of specific

species. The tree groves will provide places to stroll

and enjoy the many varieties of trees which

These gardens will offer community members

opportunities to utilize space to plant their own

gardens.

This garden will stand out as one of the country’s

finest children’s gardens by being not just a place

for children to see things grow, but to grow their

minds. I will be a place of exploration, education,

and adventure for the whole family.

These will be a series of gardens representing our indigenous

populations and the homeland lifestyles of immigrant groups

populating California. They will display typical styles and

building materials reflective of conditions in the various groups’

homeland at the time of their immigration to California.

The Commons, a large grass area, will provide an

open-air venue for large events such as plant and art

shows, trade shows, concerts, cultural festivals,

weddings and parties, to name a few.

Water features will play a major role in The Garden.

All water features will be designed to be a balanced

biological system, including recirculation, storm

detention, and technologically advanced smart

irrigation elements beneficial to the surrounding

watershed.

Habitat Conservation will be a key element

in the design and operation of the Garden.

Educational elements, displays, buffer

zones, and areas solely dedicated to

conservation will be featured.

This area of The Garden will replicate

California’s diverse environmental zones.

Observation boardwalks, kiosks, and model

landscaping will be utilized throughout the

various zones to display California’s native

flora and demonstrate the plight of

California’s endangered plant species and

environments. Wildlife and environment

friendly techniques, water conservation, and

sustainable gardening techniques will be

demonstrated in each of the zone. The

Conservatory will house those environments

that cannot be sustained in the Central

Valley climate.

The Entrance Hall will be centrally located for

purchase of tickets and will also include an

information desk, orientation area, gift/book

shop, restrooms, administrative facilities, and

security and first aid facilities.

The Exhibition Hall will include movable partitions

to sub-divide the space, a stage with professional

lighting and sound systems, display space with

natural light, ample storage for portable furniture

and equipment, restrooms, and preparation areas

with work counters, sinks, and climate control.

The Restaurants will provide catering facilities

and both formal and informal dining

experiences. Organically grown products from

the Garden will be featured.

This will be an area set aside for presentations, classes,

workshops, demonstrations and other educational venues

supported by the California Garden. Subject matter will include

a wide variety of topics under the general categories of

horticulture, California cultures, agriculture, ethno botany, arts

and crafts, and will have venues appropriate for all ages. The

Education Center will also work with schools and other

organizations to develop tours and materials as well as work

experience and intern programs.

The Conservatory will be the major architectural feature

of the garden. It will consist of climate-controlled

environments linked together around an open-air

garden. Footpaths will offer an opportunity for self-

paced, close-up look at the diverse collection of flora.

Plant materials will be organized into distinct climate

zones and labeled with the geographic locations where

these zones exist throughout California.

Books, digital information, and other

materials will be available for research

and for sale.

A nursery will be developed for garden

propagation purposes and sales to the

public of plants featured in the garden.

The gift shop will feature affordable items

of interest to those who visit the garden

as well as display, art, kitchen, cultural,

horticultural, and collectible items.

The open-air theater will be used

for entertainment from movies,

concerts, and children’s

presentations, to the classical arts

such as dance and theater.

Fountains and water features will be

utilized throughout the garden with

featured displays choreographed to

music and lights.

Sculpture and art will be featured

throughout the garden. Displays will

range from items created by children to

those created by professionals and will

include a wide range of styles and

subjects.

The Hall of Flowers will be an area set aside

for floral displays and competitions. The area

will be appropriately temperature controlled

and will contain refrigerated and work areas

necessary for the construction and display of

floral materials.

A butterfly house and gardens will provide an

environment to observe both local and exotic

butterflies and moths in their native habitat. It

will display the various stages of the butterflies

and the plants desirable for the various species.

California has some of the riches farmland in the United States

shown in the diversity of its crops, dates to apples, artichokes

citrus. Part of the garden’s focus will be to illustrate and bring

alive the state’s rich agricultural history.

California leads the nation in organic farming techniques and

sustainable/regenerative agriculture. Demonstration gardens

will inform the public and provide fresh organic produce to The

Garden’s restaurants.
